Mark 4ord Deserves His Flowers

Mark 4ord

AN 805 CLASSIC

by Odell Davis Jr

In 1996, Jay-Z dropped his first Album "Reasonable Doubt" selling 43,000 copies in the first week. It took the music world some time before recognizing the acclaimed album as it is today. Enter music artist and producer "Mark 4ord" a wordsmith rhymer whose lyrics detail the highs and lows in his 2020 LP "Opioids: Good Ending". The reference of Jay-Z's Reasonable Doubt is no typo and by no accident. Mark 4ord is playlist away from becoming a household name. In today's struggling climate for independent artists to sell records and chart, the "Opioids: Good Ending" album may not reach the Billboard 100, but it should.

Mark 4ord delivers his greatest body of work as he takes listeners on a journey throughout the Ox City (Oxnard). He States "On your own city you can have so many enemies but I got love for my city". These are the same sentiments of why this album should be heard but they'll be some that won't provide it the chance it deserves. The cover art is uniquely put together showing a bloody hand holding anxiety filled eyes, slipping through the fingers towards a lava pit, as the sun breaks through the dark clouds. Even the featured artists "Demise", "Chuwee", "Brent Urnb", "Dex" "Daniel Son" and "the Crooked One" seem perfectly orchestrated to fit their different personas. It was refreshing to hear African and Latino artists working together, reminiscent of Cypress Hill and Snoop Dogg, Mark 4ord shows loyalty to his roots and the people that live among him.

The song "Culture" features artist "Inzom" on an 70's Jazz type beat that Curtis Mayfield would have been proud of. Voice samples of Richard Pryor, political news, prime time media, and motivational themes are puzzled throughout the album. The production is on point as Mark 4ord skates on songs like "Time" and "Blowed". If you're looking for a commercial record you won't find it here but that doesn't mean it won't fit your music pallet. Mark 4ord speaks on the difficulties of anxiety, love for his city, relationships with his crew, love for his daughter and "Sunshine Eventually". Survived by his late mother, the polished artist shows adoration to her as he speaks on wishing she could see him now as he hasn't reached his peak. One noticeable thing about Mark 4ord is that Nipsey Hussle has heavily influenced him. He reveres the late MC as he mentions Nipsey often in a mentor like relationship. He represents the 805 and makes no apologies for it. It's safe to say that he deserves our "Validations" he continues "Breakin Doors" to hopefully getting his 40 mics in the Source.
